Now, I wanted to write this small article because of something's I found out were happening. I'm not gonna Karen this, I'm just gonna share my opinions on the Calypso x Leo ship.
In the RiordianVerse, I freaking loved Percabeth from beginning to end. I've always thought that it was always the best excecuted romance I had ever read. Anytime I reread the books, I confess I would always skip to the romance parts. It had basically everything. Childhood friends, cluelessness, jealousy, a love triangle, and some really good romance scenes. Some might even say it was "the greatest love story of all time." (If you know, you know.)
Now, there's a quote I really like. I don't know who it's by or where I heard it, but it goes something like this: "As a child, we hate the ones on the other side of the triangle when reading books or watching movies. But as we grow older, we tend to sympathize with the ones who had their heart broken."
I use this quote to describe Rachel Elizabeth Dare for me. When I was first reading the books in fourth grade, I hated Rachel. Purely because I thought that she was the most annoying character for disrupting the Percabeth aspect. Now, looking back, Rachel is literally one of my favorite characters. I can relate to her really well, and I feel bad for her for having to experience a bit of heartbreak while she liked Percy.
Later, when I read Heroes of Olympus, I felt a little bit disappointed by Frazel and Jiper. Frazel seemed to have a small bit of history before Percy came into Camp Jupiter, but I didn't really care for a ship where we didn't have the whole story.
I love Frazel, though, simply because sometimes you just need an innocent, truthfully loving ship. Frazel is just that and more.
I felt the same way with Jiper. I loved Piper, but being a kid, I didn't like Jason's personality. I thought Piper was giving Jason more than he was giving her. I also felt like how I did with Frazel, to where it was boring since we didn't have the whole story.
Looking back, I regret feeling that way about the Jiper ship. I think that Jason really did love her. I'm gonna be honest, I never read Trials of Apollo, so I don't know the whole story to what I'm gonna say next. It's probably wrong, but when I found out Jason died, it broke my heart. Suddenly Jiper was my all time favorite ship because, what can I say, I love a good old tragedy.
Then I found out they broke up before that because Piper realized she was lesbian. Now, innocent little me told myself that Piper broke Jason's heart and he really did love her. Then when Jason died, I told myself Piper felt remorse and decided she loved him and not Shel.
But I have a lot to say about Jiper, but I'll save it for a different article.
Being a little disappointed with Frazel and Jiper in the beginning, I was honestly waiting for Leo to get someone good for him. I am a proud survivor of the Haleo shipping phase, I will admit. I thought that Frank would get over it if Hazel and Leo got together.
Oh how I was wrong.
I threw all that away the moment Leo washed up on Calypso's island.
I absolutely LOVE enemies to lovers. Even though thats not exactly what Caleo had, they fought at first. They hated each other at first.
I thought it was the greatest thing since Percabeth.
I also love a good tragedy, like I mentioned earlier, and Calypso and Leo's stories were both pretty close to tragedies. Calypso had been cursed with a curse I personally think would be the worst curse since Tantalus. I mean, her fatal flaw was literally falling in love. The gods used that against her, big time. And Leo had so much tragedy in his life. He was on the run half of his life, right after his mother was murdered and the blame placed upon him.
I also really liked how I knew the whole story. We literally had a really good love story entirely planned out within a small amount of chapters, and I loved it!
People say that Calypso was using Leo to get off the island, but I don't think thats true. I think she really was heartbroken when Percy left, and to have someone else wash up on her island so soon and to actually love her, with her feelings responding back, I think that was a miracle for her. Both her and Leo had no one really love them in a romantic way their whole life.
When you put it into perspective, I also think that Leo really loved Calypso with all his heart. I mean, how many times a day did a beautiful immortal island goddess fall in love with him?
I think in order of best ships, this would be my opinion:
1. Percabeth
2. Caleo
3. Solangelo
(Don't worry I'll do an article on Solangelo too.)
I think Caleo is one of those ships where two broken people come together and connect over it, refilling the broken pieces with one another. I also think that it's a little bit of that "She fell first, he fell harder" elements. Not as much with the percabeth aspect, but I think it's still there.
So there. Thats my opinion on Caleo. A fun, lovey dovey, slightly enemies to lovers kind of ship. The pure kind that came from bonding over broken bondages and, literally, being trapped in the same place for a long amount of time.
